In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
